  1. It is the decision of governments of India and Pakistan to exchange their lunatics. ਇਹ ਭਾਰਤ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਗਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਦਲਾ-ਬਦਲੀ ਕਰਨਗੇ।

  1. And if they were in Pakistan, but before it was called India. ਅਤੇ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਨ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ।

  1. A Hindu man was a lawyer who lost his soundness of mind and did not want to go to Amritsar.  ਇੱਕ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਆਦਮੀ ਇੱਕ ਵਕੀਲ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਦਿਮਾਗ਼ੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਗੁਆ ਬੈਠਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ।
  1. He feared that he would be unable to do successful legal practice.  ਉਸਨੂੰ ਡਰ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਫਲ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।

  1. So in the following morning, death came to him. ਇਸ ਲਈ ਅਗਲੀ ਸਵੇਰ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਆ ਗਈ।

  1. Bishan Singh is the prominent character in the story. ਬਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਪਾਤਰ ਹੈ।
  1. He owned land in the village Toba Tek Singh. ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪਿੰਡ ਟੋਭਾ ਟੇਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਵਿੱਚ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਸੀ।
  1. He was once a prosperous farmer. ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਸੀ।
  1. When he lost his mind. ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਗੁਆ ​​ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ।

  1. But when the trouble of indo-pak broke out. ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਭਾਰਤ-ਪਾਕਿ ਦੀ ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਖੜ੍ਹੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
  1. Then visits of his relatives stopped. ਫਿਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਉਣਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਬੰਦ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
  1. He had been in asylum for fifteen years. ਉਹ ਪੰਦਰਾਂ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਗ਼ਲਖਾਨੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੀ।
  1. In fifteen years he only repeated following sentence “O pardi, good di, anekas di, bedhyana di, moog di dal of di lantern”. ਪੰਦਰਾਂ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸਨੇ “ਓ ਪਰਦੀ, ਚੰਗੀ ਦੀ, ਅਨੇਕ ਦੀ, ਬੇਧਿਆਨੇ ਦੀ, ਮੂਗ ਦੀ ਦਾਲ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਟੈਨ ਦੀ” ਇਹ ਵਾਕ ਹੀ ਦੁਹਰਾਇਆ।
  1. He never slept, either at night or in the day. ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਂ ਦਿਨ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੌਂਦਾ ਸੀ।
  1. Even the warders said that they had not seen him blink his eyes in fifteen years. ਇੱਥੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਕਿ ਵਾਰਡਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੰਦਰਾਂ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਮੀਚ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਸੀ।

  1. His daughter wept bitterly whenever she met her father. ਜਦੋਂ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਧੀ ਰੋਂਦੀ ਸੀ।

  1. When a Fazal Din met him in the asylum From his village, he told him that Toba Tek Singh was in Pakistan. ਜਦੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਫਜ਼ਲ ਦੀਨ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਉਸਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਟੋਭਾ ਟੇਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ।
  1. When the transfer of lunatics took place at Wagah, he refused to go to India. ਜਦੋਂ ਪਾਗਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਤਬਾਦਲਾ ਵਾਹਗਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

  1. There are two promises in the story. ਕਹਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਦੋ ਵਾਅਦੇ ਹਨ।
  1. One promise is given by Eveline to her dying mother. ਇੱਕ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਐਵਲਿਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਸਦੀ ਮਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
  1. In this promise she said that she will take care of her home and her younger brother sister. ਇਸ ਵਾਅਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਛੋਟੀ ਭੈਣ ਦੀ ਦੇਖਭਾਲ ਕਰੇਗੀ।
  1. She also ensures that she will run the home smoothly after her mother’s death. ਉਹ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਬਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਚਾਰੂ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਚਲਾਵੇਗੀ।
  1. Another promise of Eveline is given to her lover Frank. ਐਵਲਿਨ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਹੋਰ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਫਰੈਂਕ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
  1. In which she ensures that she will make as his wife and she expects a good life in another country. ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਇਹ ਸੁਨਿਸ਼ਚਿਤ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਬਣੇਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੰਗੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਉਮੀਦ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
  1. These two promises play an important role in her life. ਇਹ ਦੋ ਵਾਅਦੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਅਹਿਮ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਨਿਭਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। eveline promise to her mother
  1. But the promise given to mother puts her in an obstacle. ਪਰ ਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
  1. She thinks that after the death of her mother she will not be happy in her home.  ਉਹ ਸੋਚਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਖੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹੇਗੀ।
  1. Because her father ill treats her.  ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਮਾੜਾ ਸਲੂਕ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
  1. On the other side her lover brings a chance to escape her hard life. ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਉਸਦੀ ਕਠਿਨ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਦਾ ਮੌਕਾ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
  1. As she can live with him as his wife in a foreign country. ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
  1. But the promise given to her mother stands in her way. ਪਰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੜਾ ਹੈ।
  1. Due to which she is not able to decide whether to leave with her lover or not. ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਪਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਛੱਡੇ ਜਾਂ ਨਾ।
  1. Thus she is unable to resolve the clash of promises. ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਵਾਅਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਟਕਰਾਅ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਲਝਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ।
  1. It gives a dramatic end to the story. ਇਹ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਟਕੀ ਅੰਤ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
  1. Thus, Eveline failed to go away in the boat with her lover. ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ, ਐਵਲਿਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਸ਼ਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਣ ਵਿਚ ਅਸਫਲ ਰਹੀ।

  1. Father of Eveline is a cruel person. ਐਵਲਿਨ ਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਇੱਕ ਜ਼ਾਲਮ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਹੈ।
  1. He is unkind towards his motherless children. ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਾਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਬੇਰਹਿਮ ਹੈ।
  1. Even so he has beaten his sons, Harry and Ernest. ਇੱਥੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ, ਹੈਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਰਨੈਸਟ ਨੂੰ ਕੁੱਟਿਆ ਹੈ।

  1. He also shouts at her for wasting his hard earned money. ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਉਸ ‘ਤੇ ਰੌਲਾ ਵੀ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
  1. He has made the home a hell for Eveline. ਉਸ ਨੇ ਐਵਲਿਨ ਲਈ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਰਕ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
  1. In the middle he had grown gentle towards Eveline. ਮੱਧ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਐਵਲਿਨ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਕੋਮਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
  1. When she fell ill, her father also attended to her. ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਬੀਮਾਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਉਸਦੀ ਦੇਖਭਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ।
  1. He sat by her bedside. ਉਹ ਉਸਦੇ ਬਿਸਤਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਬੈਠ ਗਿਆ।
  1. He read out a story to her. ਉਸਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਈ।
  1. He also made a toast for her on fire. ਉਸਨੇ ਅੱਗ ‘ਤੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਲਈ ਟੋਸਟ ਵੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ.
  1. Then Eveline noticed that her father was growing old.  ਫਿਰ ਐਵਲਿਨ ਨੇ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ।
  1. So she felt that if she left home, he would miss her.  ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਾ ਕਿ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਘਰ ਛੱਡ ਗਈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰੇਗਾ।
  1. Thus Eveline was attached to her home and to her father. ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਐਵਲਿਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ।
  1. Thus she considers herself responsible towards her home and her father. ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰ ਸਮਝਦੀ ਹੈ।
  1. So this is the reason due to which she could not take courage to run away with her lover.  ਇਹੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਭੱਜਣ ਦੀ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕੀ।
